Anticipation curls its tendrils around my abdomen like morning glory vines twisting up the trellis Soon, starshine on the water & circular promises in the sand But, first, the snap and pop of campfire, the ppfffssst of bottlecaps, the susurrus of lakeside laughter.

Wednesday wanderings

On my glass-eyed, slipper-slide from room to room I pause to listen to each heat register’s signature whoosh, each clock’s own tock – so much more pleasing than the words she spoke which still crash inside my chest like a typhoon or Big Ben

Won’t kneel on your cushion inches up off the ground or present my tongue for a a wafer of wheat. Won’t spread myself flat on a worn, rolled-out mat Or fast for a spell and then feast. But I’ll pause in the snow after my boot crunch below sends a swarm of winter wrens flying. They [...]

Blushing anew now at the frisky dream-frolic I shared a night or two ago with an urchin whose birth occurred sometime during the second semester of my sophomore year – not high school, mind you, but college. Don’t know what’s worse: Feeling lecherous here in the waking afterglow or ancient, since the urchin is now old enough to [...]

Last night as my heavy arms turned the wheel hand over lazy hand I gave thanks for the drooping lids, the sagging spine, the bone-tired, wrung-out sensation of weary cells dividing, conquering, congregating Depleted and wanting only to curl up as an O beside the dog. Surrender this sweet can’t be weak.

While TV trucks screamed onto an Army base in Texas I asked my friend to bring me another beer. In the dim light of window neon the banter rolled – about football, new floor tiles, date nights, the mail-order PC whose big cardboard box had finally arrived Then it was time to go watch the Wild Rumpus. [...]

Partly haunted, with your swirling blasts of wintry breath, and wind that moans, and leaves pressed flat against trash cans, like hairs glued to a running child’s face. Echoes, fresh in my ears, of tears that fell a lifetime ago. Partly wanted, Your butterfly swarm of exhilaration, expectation of holly bush happiness. Round-headed cartoon kids flying [...]

Eleven days. The anticipation rolls like riptides in my belly. Of salt-kissed air. And sand-scratchy floormats. Of a time-forsaken stretch of honky-tonk seaside. An empty beach, and a ghost guard on high. The looping soundtrack of surf and gulls, laughter and heartsong. Summer’s hushed retreat. Freckles rising like fish to the surface. Of curls brushed alone [...]

In the absence of original thought, I’m stealing a poem-ish item I wrote on my MySpace blog last year, 12 short days before my official MS diagnosis. Funny, looking back it seems I wrote it weeks and weeks before I knew the score. The warp of time. Desperately seeking Euclid With the big four-oh just [...]
